Repairing rusted chrome plating

I have been looking for information on how to repair a rusted chrome plating on a McIntosh amplifier chasis I found on a garage sale and I'm very happy to have found this website hoping that someone could help me.
A couple of rust spots of about 1/4" surface diameter have penetrated through the plating and caused a very rough surface. I attempted to sand it but the corrossion was a little too deep and I stopped because I don't want to create a recess that would be too visible after applying chrome to it. Some rust residue still exist within the corroded regions. I thought of perhaps applying a soldering lead to fill it in instead and sand it down prior to chrome plating it using the kit that is available. I do not want to dip the whole chasis in a bath because I don't want to tamper with the circuitry. I have not done this kind of restoration before but have the basic understanding on chrome plating process so anyone who would like to share information on how may I go about properly chrome plating the rust spots would be highly appreciated. You need to get all that rust out first, so you'll need to make that indentation. Plating won't stick to an area of rust.

Once you've sanded the rust out, you can use a copper plate (assuming the base metal is compatible) and then apply a nickel, then chrome plate.

i.e. copper, brass or nickel.
