Thread: Hydrogen Gas. What is the cause?

  1. #1

Default Hydrogen Gas. What is the cause?

What actually causes the hydrogen bubbles to form, what is the mechanics of it. Is it formed on the anodes or cathodes, is it caused when the electrical charge hit a chemical in the water, or when the minute part of metal is pulled off the anode, or when it is adhered to the cathode.

Well, maybe the answer is in none of this. I would like to understand this process, so please help or direct me, if you can.

    Thanks
    berto

It's a simple process of electrolysis. Running a DC current through water (H2O) will produce hydrogen. The hydrogen ion is stripped from the water mole at the negative electrode. The negative electrode can be an anode or cathode depending on what process or electrical form you are using but the hydrogen will always be released around the negative electrode.
