Default remove or not remove old nickel

Hi,
PLease excuse my english, I write you from France. I'm interested by the electroless nickel kit to plate parts of an old motorcycle. I have read on a post that it was necessary to remove old chrome on parts but is it necessary to remove old nickel and if yes, is it possible to do that with battery acid ? my parts are essentially brass and steel made.
Thanks a lot,
Francis

Thumbs up Re: remove or not remove old nickel

Hola Francisb44,
Yes, you need to remove all platings:

1.Remove chrome plating layer with 30 % hydrochloric acid
(remember acid into water).
2.Removal of nickel plating layer, two options.
a. Purchase Caswell nickel strippers?
b. Nickel Stripper using reverse current (anodic) and surfuric acid.
1.The Baume should be ~ 52-55 (acid density).
2.Anodes recommended lead or carbon.
3.Connect rectifier to anodes and part to be nickel strip.

For furher information write back on this process.
Second I recommend electrolytic nickel than electroless nickel. You need to research the best nickel for your use first.

Default Re: remove or not remove old nickel

Thanks,
I was interested by electroless way because of the simplicity of use. Why do you think electrolytic way is better ?
