    There is no substitute for genuine chrome as far as it's ability to not tarnish. Copy Chrome is a great product thats safer and easier to use, but it will discolour over time and as you stated require polishing to keep it looking good. Clear coating works well providing the items are not subject to heat. Over time heat will cause the copy chrome to go bluish brown under the clear coat just like chrome and stainless steel. Unfortunately to clean it and polish it the clear coat needs to be stripped.

    I use urethane 2 pac paint over polished and plated metals. This includes "candy" or translucent coloured clear. VHT clear and other clear acrylics from a spray can are fine for items not subjected to hard wear. 2 Pac is the way to go as it is chemical resistant.
