I'm sorry to ask such a basic question, but I can't get clear on it ...
what are the major differences between cleaning, polishing, and buffing?

Cleaning is basically removing anything that isn't metal by using various methods ranging from simple washing to media blasting with compressed air or water . Polishing and buffing are the same thing where the surface is rubbed by hand or machine to flatten all surface irregularities to point where the surface is dead smooth,thus making it shine.
