Can you polish different metals on the same buff?

Specifically: aluminum, steel and stainless steel using an emery compound. Looking to save a little money...



Also, when ordering spiral wheels, you can choose either 40 or 80 ply....why would that matter?

yes you can ,good practice would be to rake the wheel after each use to remove any hard debris that could scratch your work.
40 or 80 ply refers to the number of layers of meterial that are sewn together, so a 80 ply wheel would be wider than a 40 ply

What you don't want to do is to use different compounds on the same buff. Also, the type of sewing matters. For cutting with emery you will find you have much better results using a hard buff, one that has closely sewn spirals. The looser ones are for final work with finer compounds.
