Default Opinions on buff size on a 1 hp machine

A 1 hp that turns 3450 rpm. Should I stick with the 8" or go to 10 or even 12"? If I did my math right a 10" wheel turns at 8625 SFPM. Too fast, or is there such a thing as far as aluminum goes? Thanks.

As you prolly know max recommended speed is under 8,000 fpm (as I recall), but I would buy one or two 10"-ers and see what happens.

I think they do have large motors with slower rpms so you can get full benefit of the higher hp without excessive speed.

I think that's what I'll do. Then I get FHI on 'em. As far as getting one with a lower speed, I'm working on that too. It seems there were alot of 120V AC drives in one of our manufacturing plant that's been shut down. Now all I have to do is locate one. Thanks.

Say, if you can get an extra surplus motor let me know...I could use another motor and would pay something for it.

i am using a 1.5hp with 12" wheel on alum, bronze and brass. the buff manual says i think between 35-7500 sfm but i know mine is way faster with the big wheels. my point is i have no broblems at this speed in fact it makes faster work if the sanding is right. i finish to at least 400 grit then emory on a vented buff and get the shine i want. then i move to white on loose. i dont use tripoli at this time as i have found i dont need it on the parts i am doing. hope this helps. look at the pics i just posted and judge for yourself
