    Possible, what to use? Can I treat it like aluminum?

    I'd do it just like aluminum. The old magnesium wheels looked just like aluminum unless they caught fire.

    keep in mind that magnesium is softer than alum. so sanding should start with a higher grit.
    when in doubt polish it out/ why replace it when you can refinish it
