600 RR rims question

I have a set of 600 RR rims to polish and they have the factory paint on them. Looks like powder coating. Can anybody give me any tips on stripping the paint off them? Everything I have polished so far has just had a thin clear coat and this stuff looks THICK. TIA

You can either have them blasted..or go to Pep Boys and buy "Aircraft Remover"..make sure you get the stuff in the screw top can..NOT the spray can...the spray doesnt work nearly as well. LAy down some plastic and paint the stuff on per the directions wiht a solvetn resistan brush..(it'll be in the same spot as the goop)...dont get it on anything that you dont want removed! HAHAH....P.s....it sucks really bad when you get it in your eye..it hurts really bad!

I have a Honda F4i and the wheels on my bike are anodized. Yours could be the same way. If so, a can of oven cleaner will do the trick, just be careful with overspray.

i can only add to this i coat my parts with the stripper then put in a large trash bag or cover with plastic. if its powder it will take longer to lift than paint. the plastic will keep the stripper wet longer and help it work longer. there is vapors from this stuff that evaporate so the longer it stays wet the better. if after 1/2 hr you have no response from the stripper it may be anodized. so then rinse well and dry then try the easy off.

Thanks for the input guys. They are definitly powder coated black(small chip in the paint)

I saw the work you did on the lower fork and rims and the final drive. I have an Aero and I am getting ready to do the same things. What were the compounds you used? Just black brown and white? Any info would be appreciated

I recently had a query about polishing a sportbike frame. I consulted with another customer who has been building custom bikes for a number of years (so he should know what he's talking about). He gave me the number of a guy who powdercoats - he will _bake_ off the old powder for about $75, which is well worth the money compared to fooling with a chemical mess.

If you go the balsting route, he also told me that regular blast media (alum. oxide or glass beads) will leave a texture on aluminum. If the metal is already smooth under the paint/powder, I'd use plastic beads or walnut shells to avoid making a whole lot of unnecessary extra work.
