Default removing metal lacquer

what is the best way to remove clear metal lacquer from my aluminum parts? i assume lacquer/varnish remover exists, but i was wondering if maybe sanding or some type of buffing will remove it.
im restoring aluminum parts from my 79 honda cb750f, and even with my 1hp buffer, a sisal wheel, and black emery its still a bitch to cut through the lacquer, and it seems to be 'gumming' up my wheels, rendering them stained a useless after a few strokes, requiring cleaning and more compound.
thanks for the help, im sure this forum will be a big help in this restoration project!

You can get aviation stripper. It's about the easiest way. Just check the label to make sure it won't harm alum. Most are ok but there are some brands that are pretty caustic. The other way is to sand it off. Depends on the part configuration as to how much work it will be.

"Aircraft Stripper" is actually METHYLENE CHLORIDE.

This is an aggressive solvent, usually blended with a filler to retard its evaporation. (It is best in a gel form (looks like wallpaper paste)

We sell VHT Stripper, Krylon and Permatex Decal Stripper. They are all basically the same. I have used all three and there is no noticable difference.

Spray the goop (MC) onto the part, then immediately lay a plastic sheet over it. This will retard the evaporation of this volatile solvent, forcing it to attack the paint film.

ok i got some aviation stripper, looks like snot and works great, smells like it might kill me though!
tip: this stuff dissolves rubber or latex in a heart beat, i thought it was a good idea wearing latex gloves while working with it, one drop got on and the reaction burned my skin. as far as i know and as far as the safety instructions are concerned, it will not burn your skin on its own, but should be cleaned off immediatly because methylene chloride is a carcinogen! so, latex gloves=bad idea
