This is a polisher. They sold them for people to wax their cars with. I'll look tomorrow when I go to the shop to see what it is. If it has any writing left on it.

you have it backwards. the red is micro cut and the blue is basically no cut.
as for a sander/polisher, sears has one for around 70.00 dollars that is between 1000-3000rpm. with 8" wheels that would give up to 6000sfm. as for how to mount the wheels i cant say for sure. if it has a 5/8-11 threaded spindle then caswell has the adapter that will get the job done.
fyi, as of late my steps for aluminum has been to sand all the dings and scratches out to 400 grit then wetsand to 600. then move to the wheels and i use treated vented for the emory and spiral and white, final finish is spiral and red. i have found on most of the aluminum that i do the loose wheels will give a scratch or haze.

^ Sorry, you're right on that. i guess that explain why some people will use blue to take it a step further then red.

thats the exact same problem I'm having. and almost everyone I have talk to recommends the loose wheel for the final polish tho. maybe they havn't worked on the soft aluminum?.....

i personally dont use sisal on aluminum for me with the machine i use it is to aggressive. the treated means it has a treatment that makes them a little stiffer and the cut a little faster. the vented is a pleated type of wheel that hold more compound on each charge and it runs cooler on the parts when cutting hard. caswells sells the best that i have ever tried on all the wheels i use. as well as being the best price for the quality of buff wheel.

No, the polisher I have is a little pistol type affair. I didn't get the model # yesterday but I will today, and a photo too.

Here is a photo of the polisher. I went brain dead and still didn't get the model number. I looked and it is only 2500 rpm. It has a paint polishing wheel on it here. I made an adapter out of some fender washers and a machine screw to mount the polishing buffs. It's cheap and serviceable for polishing things that are too big or too heavy to hold up to the bench machine.

here is what i use for larger heavier jobs these smaller wheels really work well
and the diegrinder spins @ 20000 rpm you can also get the wheels in rope sisal or soft cotten buffs 1, 2 and 3 inch
