i have chance of an oldish polishing machine but not sure if it will be powerful enough or fast enough, the spec is 3 PHASE, 3/4HP, 1425RPM. its a big floor standing viceroy machine, im currently using a converted bench grinder that is 2/3 hp and 2950rpm but it just slows down when i apply pressure, is this big machine going to be any better for polishing aluminium or should i hold out for a faster more powerful machine ? thanks in advance

i was going to get a 3 phase inverter as it will be used at home (240v electrics) will the slow speed mean it will take twice as long to polish as opposed to using a 3000 rpm machine ? also is 3/4hp 3 phase exactly the same as single phase 3/4hp (will it slow down when i apply pressure like my bench grinder does).

Sorry, you didn't mention you were going to run an inverter. As far as the slower motor, I don't know. It's a matter of preference more than anything. I wish I would have went with the 1800 RPM model instead of the 3600. I'm pretty sure the 3ph motor will have more torque than a single. But then again, it might depend on the type inverter you are using. I say go for it if the price is right. Good luck.

Im no electrician, but the hp on single phase should be the same as 3 ph. I have a 15hp ph converter. It runs a 5hp and 3hp buffing motors. You got to make sure you doulble the horse when you get the converter. If your going to get one of those cheaper static inverters without motor. You will expect to lose about half a horse on your buffer. So you figure that 3/4 hp will be a 1/2 hp. I would stick with single phase if your hp is that low. You need to get at least 3hp before your machine will stop bogging down. Then get a good rotary ph. converter then you wont lose hp. only on start up.

daz2206,
I'd check the price of a good phase converter versus the price of a good buffer. It may be less expensive to buy a new buffer that a phase inverter! John |
