Default Brushed finish

Is there a kit to get the brushed stainless look? I have two stainless and one nickel plated pistol slide that I would like to give a brushed or satin look. I have a 1 hp grinder/polisher in my shop. Any advice is welcome.

lilricky2,

I use a belt sander when I do a brushed finish. I use 120 or 150 grit on SS, don't have any suggestions on what to use on Nickle!

If there are irregular surfaces you could probably do it with fine greaseless on a spiral wheel. Otherwise the belt sander's a good idea.

Hey Nick, don't do the nickel one, the plating is soft and thin. Stay with a cream polish for that one unless you are going to have it re-plated.
You can do the flat sides by putting sticky sand paper on a hard flat surface and carefully rubbing straight through the strokes. You can also try clamping the gun slide in a way that you can hand sand with a hard foam block.
The finer the grit the brighter the grain. I always get it real close then go back a grit to finish it off.
Example: 120, 220, 320, then back to 220 for the final pass.
At this point you may also try using an abrasive scrub pad to soften or blend.
Hope that helps

Thanks guys, it sounds much simpler than I thought. Just need to practice a little first. Outstanding advice.
