I did perform a few keyword searches without success... So pllleeeeease excuse the following question(s)... As I'm sure this has been asked a hundred+ times before...
Background: I recently purchased the Large Bar Starter Pack, which includes one each of the following: BLACK/EMERY BAR: BLKBC5 BROWN/TRIPOLI BAR: BRBC5 WHITE ROUGE BAR: WBC5 BLUE ROUGE BAR: BLUBC5 STAINLESS STEEL BAR: SSBC5 JEWELER'S ROUGE: JRBC5 ---------------- Question: What are the specifically related grit/micron ratings of each ... This is quite important to me!... This lingering, unanswered, question is currently keeping me from using said purchase at this time; which in turn, is keeping me from 'starting' up my new 'home business'... Please help! Thanks! |

If your home business is polishing things like auto parts, seems to me the end result is what's important. |

It's for knife sharpening... It's kinda important to go in the correct order on this paticular type of thing...
I think that Caswell would atleast know, huh?..... I just think it a bit odd... Thanks for the heads-up... I was beginning to think I may have come across rude or something (with all the views and no replies and all)... Thanks for the feedback/heads-up, once again!... I'll keep digg'n! |

Certainly!... After quite a bit of dialog with some of the great makers, like Mike Stewart and Jerry Hossom to name a few...
...I've discovered the importants of a mirror polish finish, both on the body AND final edge of a knife... This keeps the body from pitty and patinaing much more and GREATLY helps in retaining edge integrity/sharpness... I'm just gunna go experienment a little... start with Emery, then Tripoli, then White Rogue and maybe I'll just stop there, not sure.... I'm not planing on using the superfine micron compounds like the blue nor red, more than likely, on my knives... Only time will tell!... Hope this helped a bit... Thanks for any and all feedback!!! |

Interesting...that's a high level of craftsmanship, for sure. And I can see the theory behind it. In my case I probably would not ever take it to that extreme, since I have knives I made from bastard files 20 years ago that still look good and hold an edge well. But for a collector-grade knife, you would be providing extra quality for its own sake. Thanks for the info.
Your order of use is correct with the compounds. The green is made for stainless, you might want to try that instead of (or before) the white. Also, you should be able to use a sisal wheel to start out, since your steel will be fairly hard. Quote:

... Thanks for the heads up!!!... I'm soaking my leather belts to shink them down a bit (they were way too slack on the grinder)... Now I have to wait a couple of days for them to thoughly dry out (don't want to strech them back out!)......I'm not using a wheel... Just a beltsander/grinder... I'll be sure to post some pics once I've gotten the hang of it and have some 'finished' or rather refinished products to share!... Once again, a BIG thanks for all the feedback! |
