Stage? If you read what I wrote, it comes after white (if that's what you mean).

I have some blue but never done too well with it except for plastic lenses etc.

ok cool thanks. Just got one wheel up to 600 and hit it with the black compound. Its working pretty well so far I think, how do I know when to move on to the next compound? I can still see some deaper scratching I think, will these buff out?

try buffing one "line" repeatedly really well with black, taking care to use a deliberate cut and then color motion. if you still see scratches other than the ones from the emory, you need to go back and take care to sand all the scratches out before moving to the next grit of sandpaper.

Just found this great forum, read Caswell's online manuals and last 12 pages of Metal Polishing Questions on this Forum to get a general feel for the technique I need to use to polish my 4 aluminum wheels while I am anxiously waiting for my order from Caswell to arrive today so I can start the project.

It seems you have done quite a bit of work already on your wheels and to me it seems stupid to let those efforts go to waste. I am a newbie to polishing but, unless the above description was a typo, I think that is your problem. The correct order from coursest to finest is BLACK, BROWN and WHITE. White should be last not brown.

I ended up polishing two and bringing them all to a shop to have the other 2 polished and all of them buffed. they only charged me 200 to do the 2 and buff the other two to match and all 4 center caps. wheels came out ok. everyone loves them.
