Help w/ newbie's SS project

Hey gang, this is a great forum and in general I've been able to learn a lot. I've got a new project refurbishing a couple of espresso machines. I'm starting from scratch when it comes to polishing and buffing the stainless steel on these machines so I'm coming to the experts for help.
I need to buy tools and wheels and well everything, so any help will be appreciated.
I've added some pictures. The first one is an example of a mirror finish before and after. Any tips on how to get this done?




And this picture shows a refurbished machine with the the mirror finish and the brushed finish. I'm at a loss about the brushed finish, do I have to polish and then rebrush? How do you rebrush?

The mirror SS comes from the factory polished but you should be able to restore the shine. Depending on how deep the scratches are, you may have to power sand them out. I use a DA (Dual Action) air sander on curcular to sand out scratches and defects. Start with 180 grit then down to 400. You could use 600 but as the 400 wears, it polishes. The problem with any mirror finish is that you'll need to blend your sanding so that it's even and feathered into the rest of the panel. If you don't, polishing will exacerbate any flaws.

The "brushed" look is acually done by sanding. I use a straight-line auto body sander with 80 grit. Run the length of the panel with the sander straight. You could also use a flat belt sander. A guide would help as you must keep the sanding going parallel. A moving start blends any overlap. You will have to practice.

I've repaired and renewed many SS trim pieces and radiator shells. Some you would think were ready for the scrap yard. Patients and practice wins out. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
