Gentlemen:
Total newb here and wanting to try polishing stainless steel for the first time. I want to give it a try on an old scratched up kitchen sink. I've read the "how to polish", but looking for the right compounds/pads to do this. With the contour of a kitchen sink, how would you go about this? or is it even possible? Thanks for any info you can share. Northstar |

Northstar,
Yes, it is possible. But if is it worth the enormous amount of work such an undertaking would entail is questionable. I have such thoughts myself at times. The sink in my sculpture studio is stainless. Every time I do I go take a cold shower instead. Stainless is a hard metal. It's hard to work, hard to sand, and hard to polish. I suggest that you find a small piece of scratched up stainless hardware and polish that first, to get a feel for what it entails. I generally use a soft pad disc sander running at 2500 rpm with 150 grit for scratched up stainless. Then 220 grit, then 400. After that I go to either black emery or directly to a green stainless compound on a spiral sewn buff. A sink is a massive undertaking. Richard Last edited by Rasper; 12-14-2007 at 07:33 PM.
