How do I get this coating off of my grill so I can polish it? I just ordered the aluminum polishing kit, and the buffing kit that comes with 6 compounds. Is there something else I will need?

djmas

You will most likely need greaseless compounds or the anodize and chrome remover to get rid of the anodize.

ok, I ordered the anodized stripper. After doing this step, where do I start to polish my aluminum grill?

Kit Includes:

Sm. Black Compound
Sm. Brown Compound
4" Sisal Wheel
4" Spiral Sewn Wheel
4" Loose Cotton Wheel
1" x 2" x 1/4" Bullet Bob

and

1/4-1/3hp Motor Buffing Kit 6" x 1/2" face

2 x Sisal Wheels
2 x Loose Wheels
2 x Spiral Sewn
1 x Buffing Rake
6 x Large Bars Compound (one of each)

After you strip the anodize, start with the black on a sisal wheel, buff the part until you get the entire part to the same finish. Then move onto tripoli on a spiral sewn, make sure you get it uniform as far as smoothness and gloss. Then move onto the loose cotton with the white. Spend as much time as it takes with the white to make that sucker shine. If the grill has deep recesses, I would paint them a flat black or something to contrast the shiney surface. The anodize remover will leave the metal smudged. Let me know if you need any other help.

Remember on all of your cutting steps to make one straight pass and come back over it with a 45 degree angle. That will help keep the metal uniform and remove pits and such more quickly. Read the guide to polishing front to back, as it is an invaluable tool.
