Default Greaseless compound leaving "orange peel"

Hello. I received my order Monday, and while I have been busy with little ungerncies, I did try a few products. First the sisal wheel works great with emery. Also I used the greaseless on a new spiral wheel 180 grit 1st.

I had no problem getting it to stick to the wheel. I discovered that I could dry it quickly with the heat gun as well. That said I let it continue to dry for over 2 hrs. When I use it -it leaves the aluminum with "orange peel"-as if I had used a wire wheel on it. I am using an 8" spiral wheel-on a 3450 rpm motor. When it wears off, I rake the wheel clean, and blow it out with compressed air.
I think it may have to do with raking the wheel, the wheel get softer and now the abrasive "slaps" agianst part.....I am not sure. I really need to master the use of the greaseless to save time. BTW the sisal /emery takes out the orange peel-but takes a while.

Thanks for any help.
James

Use a little white compound on the wheel after the greaselss dries. Re-apply as needed.

2 hours is a bit excessive. You should be able to use it right away if the heat gun hardens it up, just make sure it's not still soft underneath.

Maicojames,

In all likelihood the piece you're trying to polish has been media blasted at to high of an air pressure leaving an "orange peel" effect.

What kind of shape is the aluminum in that you are trying to polish? Are there deep scratches? Can you catch them with your fingernail on the scratches?
I would try taking the orange peel out using 320 grit greaseless, then polish with Emory on a sewn buff.

Thanks to both replies. I tried the wht-it really helps. The pieces are MC hubs and Akront alum rims. I do know they have never been blasted. I am taling about for example the side face of a rim. I have already polished it-but have some pitting which won't come out with emery/spiral ,emery/sisal- or wet dry sanding from 220,320,400 ,600. When I used the greasless (240 grit)-it left orange peel.

I think I need to get a high speed orbital sander-electric, as I have air DA, but that compressor is noisy.

Thanks, James

I guarantee that the orangepeeel is from the greaseless, and that the white compound prevents 90% of it.

Cool. That will help a ton. Knowing that, I can use the greasless as a cutter-and follow with 400 wet just enough to take out peel and previous scratches. It makes a huge difference to add wht compound.

Back to work when kids go to bed...
Thanks, James
