I'm restoring a '78 cycle with original exhaust. The pipes and mufflers are in decent shape but the previous owner appears to have cleaned up rust spots with course steel wool (Brillo pad?). Is is possible to remove these scratches with a wheel and compound? Any recommendations for a specific wheel and compound.
Thanks rickt |

If you're careful you might be able to hit them with 1,000-grit emery paper (wet), then white compound on a spiral wheel. You might end up going thru the plating, though. Maybe try the wheel first and see what that does.
For that matter, if the rust was coming thru the plating (as opposed to being deposited from something else) it's shot anyhow. |
