Default Applying Compound

I'm new to all this so please don't laugh. do you apply the compund to the edge of the wheel, or to the large area of the wheel? The reason I'm asking is because won't the flat head arbor adapter touch the metal when you are buffing. if someone could post some pics I would appreciate it.

You apply the compound to the spinning edge of the wheel.

so if i picture the disk as a tire. i am applying the compound to the tread? and using the tread to buff? is this correct?

Yes, you are essentially doing a burnout on the part you are polishing.
