jungles82,

The temperature of your metal seems to be one of your problems. The metal should be hot enough that you can't hold it to polish with your bare hands. The heat generated from the rotation of the buff will melt the Rouge and start to polish the metal. If it's not at the appropriated temperature (sweet spot) it is not going to polish very well.

Dude, that is a sand cast cylinder. It is going to be tough-you need to get it all up to 320-400 grit-and I bet you may need to do more sanding. Also , since you are unliklely to distort flat surfaces on the jug-use a sisal wheel with emery of Caswell's super sisal bar. I have been susing it on castings and really, really cuts the casting down smooth -fast. Then to spiral and emery-this will give you most of the shine, in fact on some parts it is the best shine and I leave it at that( maybe a bit with white and spiral)-then to white and sprial.

I am thinking you are using too light of pressure-and maybe moving the part around too fast. While you can use too much pressure, and burn into the part a bit-you must have heat buildup to melt the compound, that way it will cut. Can you post some pics?
