Thread: Wet sanding

    Default Wet sanding

Ok guys, well ive started re-doing my test piece and had to go right back to 80 grit to get rid of the deep-ish orange peel like scratches. Now using a palm sander, its going ok but still a bit slow for my liking (guess ill have to get used to that!)

So, question is, far as i can tell from this forum a lot of people wet sand after a while whilst going up the grits.

Question is, when should this be started? ive not got much further than hitting the piece with 80 grit so i just need to know when i should be adding water to the mix, or should it be WD40?

    Anyone got any tips/advice?

I use wet paper from 150 all the way up, usually to either worn out 400 on stainless, or to 600 on aluminum.

Water works well. WD-40 does too. Somehow WD-40 doesn't seem to make such a mess. Maybe it's my imagination. (I use a disk sander with a soft pad that tends to throw the stuff everywhere.)

I'v done about 6 Pieces on Alloy Manifold, Dellorto Carb, Rocker Cover etc and don't use wet sanding. I us 80/120/240/400 and sometime go higher when it confind place. Why I don't wet my wetand dry paper is I like to see where the scratch I need to work on.
I possibley us more wet& dry but I'm happy to if I can see what I'm doing

I then use my buffer or metal polish in tight places

But thats how I do it

to be fair i only use my sandpaper dry. Like Gafmo said, its easier to see what scratches need work on. I only use water after a while to clean the part down and clean the crud out of the sandpaper, helps prolong the paper at the same time

Make sure you have wet/dry sandpaper before adding water. Usually wet sanding is done at the higher grits (600 and up).

I think the angles you sand at make more of a difference than anything- try to go at a 30-45 degree angle to your last pass, much like the cross hatch pattern used when honing a cylinder.

For sanding I have had good luck with scotchbrite pads instead of sandpaper. Also using a sanding block if possable is a good idea.

I go from 80 and up tip I get to 320 I start water sanding all the way up to 2000 yeah lots of work but mirror finish no haze just like a chrome price u have to do everything slowly don't rush put a light close to were ur sanding so u can see were the deeper scratches is and just keep working it I usally go with the grain I don't cross sand if u sand enough believe me the scratces from to lower grits will come out sometime when I'm on 600grit I use 600 3 times LOl.keep using the sand paper till it's gone.
