    Default Firearm Refinishing

What experience does anyone have in using the black oxide process to refinish firearms? How durable?

I am a gunsmith and use the regular hot salts method. Yeah, I've got some scars and old burns, but the results are very nice. I have tried the black oxide blackening chemical once here and was not overly impressed with it. I just read the directions and might try something different.

Gunsmith here also, I would not use a cold black oxide to refinish a gun unless you want a flat black finish. The cold BO doesn't do well when applied to anything but a sand blasted surface, at least that is my experience. Unless you plan on refinishing a bunch of them it is not worth the investment in a hot black oxide setup. Hell, it's not worth it for most gunsmiths as the large bluing companies are so reasonable (checkmate is a big one).
