I have a problem with the stainless steel trim off my 1961 Lincoln. I understand the trim was "flash" chromed at the factory, no copper plate. Not realizing it was chromed I polished as you would stainless and went through the plating in several areas. Question is, can you strip the chrome plating so the stainless can be polished or should it be chrome plated. My local plater refused chemicaly strip or chrome it. Trying to Sand and or polish the chrome off takes long.
Thanks. Gary Fickeisen Moravia, NY |

You can strip the chrome using muratic(hydrochloric) diluted 50% with water. Stainless can be polished to look nearly as good as chrome and will hold it's shine well. I think the chrome was used for scratch resistance on those pieces. It's your call on whether or not to re-chrome them. I wouldn't unless your going to be judged by real sticklers.
