Default Plating for a Fire Place

I have a prefab fireplace that has a shiny brass plating that has become pitted. Is there a product that I can use to replate the fireplace? I would want the finish to be a shiny brass or a dull black. Is this something a novice can do?

What metal is under the brass plate?

How deep is the pitting? Is it down to the base metal?

I've been told that the base metal is steel and that the clear coat can be removed and then the brass plating buffed lightly. The clear coat would then need to be reapplied. The pitting is down to the metal.

Thanks

Some clear coat remover, an aluminum polishing kit (works on brass too) and some VHT Clear Lacquer should do the trick.

Go to http://www.caswellplating.com and use the search tool to search for the products mentioned above.
