Stainless Steel gun slide polishing?

I'm looking at the Stainless Steel Metal Polishing Kit and various Stainless Steel Polishing Compounds for possible use for cleaning up, maybe SLIGHT shining/brightening up a Stainless Steel Slides with a Matte finish on a handguns.
I don't need a complete restore, maybe just some light cleaning up or a good buffing with a buffing compound and buffing wheel.

I've heard some opinions that this should work and some that it won't like this response:
"Looks like the matte finish is a standard SS that has been glass bead blast finished. I don't know how deep the matte finish is but it would have to be sanded down past the glass bead finish and brushed or polished to re-surface it. A good metal finisher could do it but It looks fine to me the way it is".

Any input or suggestions?

If it's an antique gun of any value I wouldn't touch it. If you use a mechanical means to do a "SLIGHT shining/brightening" your going to lose the matte finish. I would try using a metal polish very lightly and see what it does. Try making a paste from BonAmi, or try Simachrome, or Maas metal polish. Anything you try go real easy so you don't ruin the finish that you want to keep.
If it's dirty use some Acetone to clean it first.
