Default Removing copper plating

I am working on a step side pickup project. I would like to powder coat the steps to match the color of the truck. The steps were chrome plated at one time, but the chrome has peeled off leaving the copper plate base, which is also peeling in some places. I would like to remove the copper without damamging the steel substrate. I need to repair some small dings in the steps as well. I would like to try to remove the copper plate uisng electrolysis if possible. I've seen the recipe for removing rust, what is the recipe for removing copper?
