Thread: Need a large, single use oven. Any suggestions?

  1. Need a large, single use oven. Any suggestions?

I want to powder coat my new trailer. I just built it and plan to blast it and then powder coat it. I need to figure out something to build a temporary oven out of. I can generate the heat without any trouble but need something to contain it until the curing is done. Anyone have a suggestion on what to use for the "Oven"?

Efficiency is not a consideration. I will use a propane fired forge to generate the heat and can get it hot enough to melt steel so all I have to do is control it and can do so manually by turning it on and off based on a thermometer.

Once the trailer is done it will be disassembled and not used again.

Obviously I need to keep the cost down since it will only be used once.

    Thanks

It would very likely cost a bunch less to have the trailer done by a facility that already has an oven large enough to cure the coating. An oven large enough to cure an entire trailer would be quite costly. it would cost many dollars in materials, if you made an oven just large enough to wrap the trailer........ not to mention the amount of time involved in the construction. It would be prudent to farm this one out.

I'd have to agree--Farm it out for a one-time shot. It's not like you can throw a tarp over it and bake. The materials will have to withstand the heat. And, I don't think you can control that large of an oven manually with a single heat source. I have a forge too and while it does produce high temps, getting that heat spread evenly through a large oven would be a tall order.

dont give up to quick, i got proved wrong by a customer just the otherday. If you believe it or not a plastic double wall green house can and will stand temps of 400 degrees and substain it for hours... I do some coating for a green house manufacture and we needed to do a large item, they suggested it and i laughed, they made a fool out of me with a 12 x 16 x 8 greenhouse and a 250,000 btu jet heater... You can buy portable shelter frames for less than 200.00 with a heavy cloth canvas cover, as long as air is circulated with a shop fan it can be done, i kept one for doing large hard to move parts like backhoe and dozer parts that are just to heavy to move around. Its not a fast process but it can work. Hope this helps, if you need more info email me at wickedpaint@yahoo.com
