    Default TC troubleshooting

I hear talk of erratic pid temp. changes. My oven has been built since January and I have not had a problem with it. All the sudden the temp would climb up to 2330 degrees, then the controller would flash on and off reading, orAL. Bought a new pid 1/16 DIN PID Temperature Controller (Relay Output) [SYL-2342] - $44.50 : auberins.com, Temperature control solutions for home and industry same thing. What can go wrong with the TC? What are the dos and donts of the TC? I need help with this one I have no oven with parts lined up to be PC.

I would first check that the PID parameter for the thermocoupler type is set correctly. Then check the tc wiring to determine if it is damaged. Does the pid read the correct ambient temperature before starting the oven?

I would then contact Auber as they do have technical support for their products. The orAL reading sounds like some sort of alarm output.

I have checked the parameter for the TC. It does not read the correct ambient temperature.

If the ambient temperature reading is not correct at startup, then it sounds like the tc is bad, assuming the polarity of the tc connections are correct.

. The polarity of the tc is correct and I was thinking that the tc was bad. I was working good , the next day I powered it up and started getting "orAL" flashing on the controller. It seems like its from the wiring, not at the connections of the pid. I can move the wires to get the correct ambient temp, the elements will turn on, and work fine and when the oven heats up around 320 it starts flashing again. I did manage to go threw AT with the new pid. I bought my control box from Ted and I know its not the wiring in the box. What can go wrong with the tc from the wire to the tc probe? What could of happened to make this go bad? I have searched and never heard of anybody having this problem. I hope I can get in touch with someone today, I sure would like to see some kind of light at the end of this tunnel

You seemed to have answered your own question. Check the connections for tightness. If they're tight and you can move the wires to make it work, check the solderless (crimp-on) connections.

Yea I know, it just seems kind of odd that all the sudden it does this. I just want to make sure that its the tc before I order another.

Sounds almost certainly like a bad TC. Could be loose connections like CarWiz suggested or a short between the wires and the outer stainless sheathing. Not a common problem, but it's a simple and cheap fix to replace the tc.

Tc's anneal as they get used so they can unfortunately 'drift' as its known this throws them out by a few degrees. They can break at any time causing and open circuit which puts the control instrument to show sensor break or top limit.
