    Default Newbie Oven build

    Hey guys,

I'm attempting to build a PC oven for small business use. I first attempted to find a toaster oven that would suit my needs, but came up with nothing. I'm going to go ahead and build my own out of most likely 22guage steel and 1/8" 1x1 angle iron. The overall size will be 24"w X 16"h X 18"d, and will have to work off of 110v. I'm having a bit of an issue with trying to find a heating element that will work with 110. I'm going to go ahead and order a 2 pole 40A contactor and 1/16 pid from Auber, but I can only seem to find 110v elements on ebay. I've read of you guys gutting toaster ovens for parts, but would the element from an standard toaster be able to heat an oven of this size to 450*? Any help would be much appreciated guys.

A 120 volt toaster element around 1500 watts will heat this size oven just fine. Probably under 10 minutes.

A 3000 watt 250 volt element would probably also work running on 120 volts if a heat up time of 15 minutes or so is acceptable.

Are you building the walls thicker than 1"? One inch won't allow for much insulation.

I planned on leaving the walls quite thin, and covering them with 3M fire shield. To go into further detail of the structure it will be internally insulated with fire shield, and a drawer will be built from expanded steel so that I can run lateral posts, to hang items from. I also figure the increased surface area of expanded steel will promote more even heating. Lemme know if I'm crazy.

Edit: also If I purchase a toaster and gut it, would I still need to purchase a pid or contactor?

The pid allows you to enter a target temperature and then manages to that set point. You can manually monitor the temperature and adjust the toaster oven controls as needed, so it depends on how much 'hands on' monitoring you wish to do.
