    Default New oven build.

I have been powder coating on and off for about five years. I have a need for a bigger oven now and would like some help from you guys. This seems like the place to get good info. What I plan to build is a 4x6x6 oven. I have did a lot of reading on what elements to use, where to put a fan, how to use wattage calculator, where to get parts etc... The questions i have are; What kind of insulation should i use. How should I lay out the metal stud to allow for the insulation. Should I use galvinized sheet on the inside and out. I have money but will wait till I here back first. I have did research but fill free to tell me anything I need to know. Thanks for your time. HUTCH

Either mineral wool or unfaced fiberglass insulation will work. They actually have the same insulation value, but the mineral wool has a higher temperature rating. Either can be cut to the dimensions needed to fit in the oven walls.

Galvanized sheet is what is most often used for oven construction, both inside and out.

Thank you for the info Guru. Is there a right and a wrong way to lay out the metal 2x4 studs? What is good wall spacing, one stud every 12" more or less? New at this and trying not to make to many mistakes. Thanks again

12" would be fine imo as there is a lot of latitude in oven building. Just give some thought to doubling the ceiling studs(for hanging parts) and the floor. Also if you are using a fan to recirculate air and want the duct internal to the walls, plan for that. I also placed a stud diagonally in the door for extra support.

I have a temp calculator question, I put 400 degrees in "fahrenheit temperture increase" section 4x6x6 size it came back 8438 watts witch is about 3 2800watt oven elements, question is does this sound right or should I have put 500 in for the increase ? What do you guys think ?

I think the ''EXCEL' calculator listed at the end of the sticky is much more accurate. If you want to use the heater shop, I suggest you use 'average' insulation for a more accurate estimate.

IMO a 144cf oven isn't going to heat with only 8400 watts but would require approximately twice that.

My oven is 4x6x6 I have 2" walls with mineral wool insulation. Framing is 2x2 16G steel tubing. The sheeting is 24G non galv inside, and 24G Galv. outside. I use 4-3400Watt elements and the oven will go from 55 deg to 450 in 25 min. 650 in a little over an hour.

Thanks for that info Guru. Also thanks Full bore I think I will kind of follow your lead on this build. I did however run into a little problem, where to put my oven? I was going to put it in the garage but my garage is at least 20ft from the house, so I am worried about the voltage drop, as I will need about 40ft or so of wire to run. Question, is there any reason I should not put it in the basement next to the main breaker paniel. This is where I wont to put it. Should I just go ahead and run the wire and put it in the garage? Please help
