Default My oven out of an oven thread.

Well I've posted here a little over the last year or so and have been powder coating for just as long. I've been powder coating out of a home oven.

Most of my powdercoating is done on Vintage Honda Mini-bike parts as I have a small company that does restorations and salvage. I've been powder coating all of my own small parts and taking the larger parts to the local coater. He is very reasonable but the turn around time is very slow and some times the work just isn't up to par. I need to be able to do my own frames etc. when I need them done.

I'm not trying to re-invent the wheel here or build an overly complex oven. My idea is fairly simple. I have an extra home oven in the gagage and tonight I gutted it and labled all the wiring. I'm wanting to basicly put this ovens internals and controls on a 4x4x6 box that I fab up. I was going to gut a fridge but I'm thinking it would actually be easier to just fab up my own.

I really only have 1 concern right now but I'm sure you guys have some more. I'm not sure if the size of the burners in the current oven and possibly need more powerfull ones? any ideas or suggestions? I probably spent 3 hours or so today alone and found a few other guys who built similar ovens and it seems like they just used the burners out of the home oven in the larger built oven.

    Hello jthomas7
You should have plenty of heating elements. The two oven elements and the 4 surface elements (yes the surface elements will work fine). You will need a PID and a SSR or Contactor. The PID will give you better temp control.

I'm using 2x 3500 Watt Broiler elements for my 4x3x6 oven.

The oven is a self cleaning oven so the thermostat will handle the load of boath burners going at once.

I plan on wiring both elements into the oven circuit and use the existing controls and electronics. No pid or SSR.

OK well today I possibly lucked out but you guys can probably tell me if I did or didn't.

I found an older upright freezer. Instead of having an all plastic interior it had some plastic on the door and plastic trip around a metal inner compartment.

I got rid of all the plastic, removed all the fridge electronics, installed my burner, thermostat etc.

Tomorrow I plan on purchasing some L flashing to cover the exposed areas of insulation. I will also buy sheet metal to cover the door insulation. Is their a reason this won't work? I realize the paint won't last long but I can't see any reason this won't work.

I need some rope door sealant and I see Teds quit selling oven building materials. Any suggestions where I can buy it?

    Hello jthomas7
Don't forget about a window in the door. You should be able to salvage the window out of the oven door.

Well today the local building center sold me 3 8 foot sheets of 4" L flashing for $10 as it had a little damage to it. I got it all flashed in and sealed up today.

The local Heat and air supply place sold me a 3X8 sheet of 26ga. sheet metal for $23 and I will be using it to sheet the door. I haven't sealed it up yet so we will see what I can do about a window.

Would a local home improvement place sell the rope seal? Ted's no longer sells oven parts so I don't know where to go.

Try your local hardware. Our local Ace Hardware has the rope seal for wood stoves. It's like $10.00 and I think it's 7' long.
