Could a home-brew Babington Waste Oil Burner be used to fire a PC Oven?

"The Army tried for a long time to get this to work, but when the Marine Corps took the lead on the program, they discovered a new piece of technology called the Babington Airtronic Burner."

Conventional high-powered burners shoot air and fuel through a nozzle, which gets clogged. This burner uses the principle of the whale. when a whale sprays a plume of water, it is not spitting water, but air.

There is a thin film of water that forms over the hole and when the air blows out, it atomizes the water, making it look like a spray.

The Babington uses the same principle, It is a sphere with a little hole in it.

Fuel runs over the top of the sphere and air is pushed through the hole. When fuel flows over the hole it is atomized and sprayed into the chamber for complete combustion.

This technology enables the burner to achieve a temperature of 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. But because the burner produces such high heat, there are no emissions.


FYI:

I found a few pics online and will attach them..., But just looking at this thing it burns everything from cooking oil to waste oil in automobile engines... also read that even if it has a 20% water in the fuel that it will still burn and eventually vaporize all of the water with the extreme heat it creates..

Would LOVE to see if anyone has a waste-oil fires PC oven and how they went about doing it IF there is anyone here

Rob, I took a stab at this question a month or so ago but no one had any input. I have been doing some more research on my own. The common burner used for this is a Beckett Burner they can be picked up on ebay for under $100 delivered and could possibly be picked up cheaper locally. These are a really cool setup and could be made much safer than propane torpedo heaters.

Here is the part I can’t find much info on. To make these much safer and for oven use the flame needs to be contained and the heat captured by a heat exchanger of some type. Do a search for "Magic Heat" they have a heat exchanger that mounts in a wood or gas stove flue pipe and captures the lost heat that flows up the pipe. This system would need this type of exchanger that could with stand +500F temps. The flame and heat from the burner could then be routed through the exchanger with a blower that blows the heat into the oven.

Does anyone here have a manufactured oven that has a gas burner? If so can you get pics of the heat exchanger and how it’s made?

I am currently building an oven using an old parking garage booth I picked up at the local scrap yard. I bought two of these one is 6'x5'x7' and the other is 7'x4'x7'. I will have to shorten these to 6' tall because of height of my garage ceiling. I’m still deciding on which one to use for the oven. The other one will be converted to a powder spray booth. Which one do ya'll think will be best for the oven?

The plan is to make the oven electric then tinker with the beckett burner idea and see how well it works. Anyone here have any other ideas for a heat exchanger?

Heat exchanger as in a pipe in a pipe with say the inner one being stainless steel and between the layers is where the heat generated is removed?

Couldnt you do that with the babbington and add a fan system to circulate the heat made between these layers?, Maybe a strong fan at one end and a screen at the other..

The output I would think is incredible and the fuel saving would make the thing pay for itself once built..

In the above pics the guy built one with a 2' or 3' black iron pipe, But what if this spanned the width of your oven at the bottom from one side to the other with the double layer pipe and fan setup..

Just my mind grinding again.. ignore the "whirring" noise... lol

Added a picture of the babington ball. - Controlling the flame is as simple as shutting off the pump that pours the oil over the ball itself..., Connect that setup to a thermostat and your ready to ROCK...

Rob there is a yahoo group search for "alternate feuls" tons of info on this subject. Did you check out the magic heat? it is a metal box with 10-20 round tubes welded horizontally in the box. The heat from the stove pipe travels vertically around the tubes and heats them the blower is mounted in the back and blows through the tubes. This could work the way you refered to make a long 6" stainless pipe then drill and weld several 1" tubes across it. Then contain the force of the blower blowing over an through the tubes into the oven. The exaust the exits already cooled through an outside vent pipe like a hot water heater vent.

Bet it could be layed flat and used the same way IN an oven ya think??

Check out the Beckett burners. They are a fuel oil burner converted to waste oil. They already have have the ignitor, pumps and safety devices needed. Works on the same principle as a babington only uses a tube instead of a ball. For $100-200 you should be able to build one of these to heat a PC oven.

Had one in my hands today at the Junkyard.. Poor thing was ran over by the forklift tho... UGHH!!, But I will keep my eyes open.. (I answer the phone there sometimes and see everything that comes in..)

Got this yesterday for the Fiero convertible project.., The complete roof area from a convert Sunbird.. and only a day later the header is almost installed.. (in this pic its just the header part of the roof sitting on the top of my windshield for a test-fit after just getting home)



I want to get the convertibles framework all done then powdercoat the parts in silver/black VIEN aka "hammered" just before the upholstery is made because they will be partially visible from sitting inside the car...

I know.. WHO in GODS NAME wants a Fiero convertible??
