Ok, got the contactor and elements today. Gonna go to the shop after class (which im in now). But, can i use the power wire from the back of the oven to hook up to the contactor that way i dont have to wire up a plug? And is 10ga good enough or should i go a step bigger? Also what do i hook the ground up to?
And you said something about mouting the switch inside something?

10 ga will be fine for the internal wiring. Make sure the wire does not come in contact with any hot surfaces or exposed to the direct heat. Ground to the metal frame of the oven. The reason I mentioned something to mount the switch in was to reduce the exposure to live wires once the oven is operational.

Yes, but you have to build some kind of enclosure to house all your electrical stuff. And somewhere to mount everything. If you us a terminal block you have somewhere for your neutral and a place to grab your coil circuit and inside light from. I got the block and ground strap from one of the old ovens I used. I even used the little amber light off the old oven and but it above the thermostat dial. But it took me a while to figure out its 220 and not a regular little light bulb.I just need to cut a cover out so my ten year old don't stick his fingers in it. Check my pic.

Hello Mike! I have been reading and admiring your thread and picture on your oven and by the way it looks great! I will be finishing my own oven this weekend and was hoping to pick your brain on the wiring of my oven? I'm good at house wiring but this oven wiring is a whole different animal. I could not figure out by your picture where the 240 comes in from the panel and connects too,and the wires that go to the elements. Pardon my ignorince on this but I'm trying understand. If you know of a diagram that could help me,please let me know. You could e-mail if you like. dnalley@ashleys.info

Thanks Mike!

Ok, made some progress this past weeked, but not enough to get out oven running. We built a box out of some sheet metal that we had laying around. We ran the oven cord into the box and hooked the two powers up to the contactor and ran the neutral to the ground strap like Mike did. We also got an on/off switch partially wired but that is where it got messed up. I looked at the thermostat from the back of the oven and got confused on what wires needed to be hooked up to where. I know different ovens will have different wires, but what ones need to be hooked up? Just power? Im really confused here. Mike, im gonna email you my number so you can give me a call, i need help. I need to get this running, ive got jobs lined up.

OK Ryan hope that helped. The more I thought about it You said you had three 2700 watt elements Instead of running 2 number 8's down and trying to parallel wire them three elements with just two male spades on each element. Run 6 number 12's down. There are 6 places to connect onto on the secondary side of that contactor. Just run one from each side of the contactor (two wires) to each element. It's alot easier to work with the small wire. It's up to you I think you got it now.

2700 div. by 240v = 11.25 amps. All you really need is 14 gauge. But go with 12 (stranded). Like my voc-tech teacher always said over wire and under fuse and you'll never have to sleep with your boots on.
