i am not building an oven, but wanted to comment. I was using a track torch to cut some 1/4 inch steel diamond plate. The plate was already in place, so 3 inches under needed to be protected. the hardi backer worked for 20 feet of direct oxy torch 3 inches above.
Don't know if this helps, just my experance.
3" AWAY slag blast. Wow, that's pretty impressive acctually. I feel much better about getting hardi for my oven interior![]()

I would caution you on one thing when using the backerboard. This is a compressed fiber product which means that it will create it's own dust. I would suggest sealing the surface to make sure that loose fibers don't get into you freshly coated parts. Personally I would be tempted to use ceramic to coat it as that will hold up to repeated heat cycles without a problem.
anybody have any problems with dust from this board?
im thinking about using it since sheet metal has gone through the roof. I priced some 18ga galvanided at 60 bucks a sheet. ouch!
It only took 3 1/2 sheets of 18g galv 4 x 10 to do the interior of my 4 x 4 x 4 oven. With a good amount of excess metal for a smaller oven. A little pricey, but I think the product will last longer. One of those; "Way the cost of initial expense vs repeated expense". Just my 2 pennies
I'm using Hardi Backer initially, then when money allows, I'll cover the hardi with light gauge tin. My oven is really raping my bank acct right nowso If I can get it opperational, then tin the inside later, that will be best I think
