I recently put up some tile in my house and used backer board. If you run your hand along the surface it creates a fair amount of dust, and even worse loose fibers. I'd say most of the dust was from being stored in the Depot but the fibers continued even after I blew all the dust off and began to apply the mastic. If I were going to use the backer board(which I do think is a good idea) I would spray it down with ceramic or perhaps furnace paint, in order to seal the fibers to the board. Furnace paint or high heat paint will last a good long time and is relaitvely cheap and a good measure to prevent potentially job ruining fibers from getting on your work. Just my opinion. but for the price of VHT it's worth it. I'd say that flat silver would do the trick http://www.caswellplating.com/vht/vht_high.htm

does anyone know if this product will withstand the constant heating/cooling? not burning at XXX degrees F and falling apart from the rigors of drastic temp changes may be two entirely different things.

You have a very good point! In my opinion it should not be effected by the temperature changes. For one the change does not take place rapidly, as in seconds. Most of the time when you see a part that is effected in this maner by heat it is due to a drying effect. By this I mean water or protective chemicals being drawn out of it by the heat it is exposed to. This product is formed in an autoclave, which uses presure and heat to seal it. This process along with other treatments also make it very water resistant. So getting back to my original point...there should be "no" moisture in the board or absorbed by it to be drawn out causing the product to become brittle.

Please keep in mind I am not an expert on this stuff, this is just based off of observation and knowledge of similar situations.

When it comes right down to it (since we are using this product in a way it was not intended to be) Banditperformance said is the best with..."Only time will tell."

One thing I know, they have a test panel in a plexi box at the supply store. It's in water. Been there on the counter for 2 years they say. You smack this thing around, the HardiBacker is not breaking down in the water, that's for sure. Hopefully it's heat life is as good. could afford to replace walls every 2 years, that would be great

what material would you use on the outside, can it be used for both in and out, would you insulate between inside wall and outside. also can I use the parts from an old oven and use it in a built oven about twice the size if I use both elements together?

You can use it fro the outside too. I just used metal roofing for mine. Ya, you need to insulate. HardiBacker has an insulation value of only R0.13 or something low like that. Basically no insulation value.
