Default Plug Question

OK,
I have a 220 compressor in my pole barn. I ust got a free oven for my powder coating projects. The plug on the oven is different. Since I probably woun't run both the compressor and oven at the same time, I was thinking of just plugging into the same outlet. The oven has a different plug. Can I just swap out the plug? Or will I need something different power wise, and need to run a new wire from the box along with a range type receptical?

The wiring going to your compressor is probable to small to run the oven and like wise the breaker. If you size everything for the oven it will be to big for the compressor. The compressor will run but will NOT have the protection it needs. Another words if the compressor over loads it won't trip the breaker (because it's rated for the oven) and will burn up instead and may catch fire. It certainly can be done but you have to be very careful and if your garage burns down your insurance will not be happy..................

Besides that, a four wire with the ground is a real good idea. No shocks for you. Do the wiring it's safer and better. You will be glad you did.

Thanks. Its not a big deal to run the wiring, just would have been simpler to do it other wise.
