in my never ending quest to be cheap, i'm wondering how many of you are using plain old unfaced fiberglass in your ovens? i think i have read that several of you are using it.
it looks like it is the same thing kitchen ovens use, but owens cornings told me theirs was only recommended to 250F. i haven't called around on mineral wool locally yet, but mcmaster's price for it is a little steep for me. if i had electric in my barn, i would put a piece of fiberglass in my old kitchen oven at 450F and see if it deteriorates, but i don't so i can't! getting power out there is the next project. |

Check out my thread here: Here's an inexpensive alternative to mineral wool insulation It talks about an alternative to the rigid mineral wool insulation that is almost as cheap as regular fiberglass.
As for your question; from what I've been able to read fiberglass insulation can be used, but you will definately need to cover it with sheet metal or something similar. However, I still think you'd be pushing it. The insulation I mentioned in the thread would probably be the best choice for only a few more $$. |

Definatly the miner wool is the way to go. I have tested the home fiberglass and it will brown but thats about it and thats going to 600deg. Also the blow in attic insulation will work. Now granted 450deg is the most you will probably need but I like to be sure. I would use either, but I definatly would not venture to far from the oven when in use, no matter what materials I use...

i used the house insulation and it works fine. its not turing brown either.i ran my oven at 500 degrees for an hour. the insulation will withstand more than u will or can put to it.

Home FG works, but, I have tested Mineral wool and FG in my large oven 10" thick walls. ANd 6" out from the inside wall, with home FG, it was to hot to keep hand inside wal. With Mineral Wool, I can keep my hand in ther. Both Batts were claimed R22, and were 6" thick batts, but the MIneral wool clearly is the winner for higher heat applications. I think for any application really, my building supply store now is mostly only stocking minera wool. It's cheaper than FG too, Roxul is the brand name I used.
