cant the elemnts be wired in series like the attached diagram.

NO! Well, I suppose you could but the total output would be about 1000 watts. Ok for making toast but not for an oven.

Elements wire in series ,, I would Parrell them,, Make sure you contactor can handle the load,, Make Sure you have a good Ground also.. Wire size, and breaker size Make sure that is coverd also
