Default New oven builder

O.k. I have read for hours this week on this forum and you guys have inspired me to build my oven instead of buying one for 10k. I think a 4 x 4 x 6 is perfect. I started calling around for metal prices and materials. What should I expect to spend on a 20 ga 4 x 10 sheet of galvanized metal? I got a price locally and it was $95.00 a sheet. Is this about right, or high. Thanks in advance Rick

That may be a little high. I recently got some 20 gauge hot rolled for $45(4X10). I used 24 gauge galvanized on my oven and got it locally for $50(4X10).

$95 is crazy expensive for ordinary heating and cooling sheet metal. I paid $28 for a 4x10 sheet (20 gauge I think). I probably called about 15 places before I found it for $28 from a custom heating duct work company. Defiantly do some calling around. If you go with stainless you will pay a lot more.

I got plain A-1008 20ga. in 4x8 for $33. 22ga. in 4x8 was $26. A $6 rattle-can of hightemp (1200*) ceramic silver will do about 2 1/2 sheets.

Your supplier may have tried to sell his old stock. This time last year, steel prices were nearly double what they are now. I restore antique and classic cars and buy quite a bit of steel sheet in 22, 20 and 18ga. I sure was glad the see the prices come back down some.

I just got my studs for my oven, kind of worried alittle. The studs are 25 ga. and kind of flimsy. Is this what everyone else is using. Sorry about all the questions, but I'm new to this. Thanks Rick

I believe there are two grades of studs, but I ended up using the same ones you have. After the frame is built and the sheet metal skin attached it will be plenty strong. If you're going to be moving it around, just add extra supports in the floor and it will be fine.
