I used furnace cement and it seemed to be the cause of dirt in my powder. I got the rubberized silicon sealer by Rutland. It cures at room temp and will withstand 600 deg. So far, no problems and it stays put. I ran it around the seams and joints where the metal joined. I picked it up at Menard's, but am sure other place like that handle it.

Thanks JTW,

Any thoughts on the use of automotive high-temp silicone RTV as a sealer? It's easier for me to get in caulk tubes and works really well for things like header flanges, etc. Whadaya think?

Pretty much the same thing. The Rutland is an RTV(room temperature vulcanizing) silicone sealant and most if not all RTV products are good to at least 600 degrees.
