Question Oven question

When riveting or screwing inner panels together is it necessary to make some relief in holes for expansion as oven heats up. I cant help but think there would be buckling in the walls if tightened down. I am about to start building my oven.

I used galvanized sheet metal and haven't noticed this problem. If you screw/rivet every 6 inches or so I don't think there will be a problem.

The only real issue that I've noticed is if you use to thin of a gauge of steel, it will expand and contract with the temp variations. You will know this as it makes lots of noise. Ask me how I know this.

Just a suggestion if you could have the shop that cuts and breaks your sheeting, have them put some "stiffening breaks" in basically the shape of a X from corner to corner. It will help to keep the sides from moving around quite as much. I definately agree with putting the rivets or screws fairly close together as well.

we used 20ga (i think) galvanized steel on 25ga studs. 1/8" aluminum rivets spaced ~6" apart. i used an 1/8" drill bit, so no relief. this is a rather small oven (5x2x1ft), but it's been great. no warping, no noise during heating/cooling.
