Fired mine up today. It took a little over 10 minutes to reach 400 degrees. Once at 400, temp. varried between 387 to 411. Is this normal?

If your PID has the Auto-Tune feature, run that from an ambient temp oven. That will set stored parameters based on your oven characteristics. Once set, it should tighten the heat range up a lot on succeeding runs. The parameters are stored even when powered off afterward so you need only to run Auto once unless you change something in the oven.

It's important to check that your PID is registering the correct PV (Present Value) temperature before the Auto-Tune. You'll need an accurate thermometer to compare the PV display to ambient temperature. If the PID is off, you can set a temperature off-set to correct the thermocouple sensing. Also, make sure the thermocouple is not in direct contact with a wall and that the tip is in free-air.

Once you run the auto cycle, let the oven cool to ambient temperature then run another cycle for a test. It should stay within a few degrees of your SV (Selected Value) temperature. If not, report back.

I've tried moving the tc, auto tune. didnt make any differance hardly at all moving the tc.@ 220 the oven will heat up to 250. tired by puting a part in the oven, mpt ranged from 290 to 385 I checked inside temp with another gauge, and it was right at what the pid control said. the only thing I can think is the need for a fan and/or vent. i feel like the oven tight, even at a 400 setting the wall never get warm and the mpt is around 480 oven temp ranges from 375 to 415. I do know the manual is helpful, but i have a hard time fully understanding.

I need to know what PID you're using so we are talking the same language. Most will have three sections of user definable parameters. One for setup, one for control and one for temperature values. I need you to step through the three sections (addresses) and list all the setting values that are currently stored and their description.

You shouldn't be getting such a wide range of temperature fluctuation, even without a fan. I suspect a problem with the thermocouple (TC) if you ran the auto tune correctly. Is TC connected directly to the PID without any intervening junctions or connecting blocks? Are the connections tight?

I bought the control box from Ted with the PID already installed. Whichever one that is. Its a SYL-2 or SYL-4 according to the manual. Its all wired right and I followed the directions for the control box.
