You can take a drop of acid, muriatic or sulfuric and drop it on the part. If it fizzes violently, it is pot metal.

Would battery acid work? I would prefer to not tamper with my car battery. Is there a similar household cleaner/chemical that contains enough acidic trace amounts to produce the same chemical reaction?

Yes, battery acid = sulfuric acid.

You can go to a hardware store and buy some swimming pool/concrete cleaner...that's muriatic acid.

If you are doing plating, having these acids on hand is useful anyway. They're the basis for the pickels used to de-plate etc.

I think a 50/50 split would be fair

What kit of ours do you have?

Most likely, you'll just need a Pot Metal Primer kit.

I have the Copy Chrome Kit. When I am better at plating I will purchase the triple chrome kit.

Then you'll need the Pot Metal Primer Kit to plate over the Pot Metal before Copy Chroming.
