| Plating Pot Metal Plating this troublesome metal can be very challenging. If you have questions, tips or tricks about plating onto pot metal (zinc diecast), this is the place to post them. |

I have an old telephone (Western Electric 202) that is in pristine condition inside and out, but the paint has failed--evidently, solely because of small eruptions in the pot metal. Is a good metal primer enough of an undercoating (after I strip, sand and polish the metal), or would it ensure a longer-lasting finish to brush-plate the metal first? If so, what plating should I use? I'm thinking Flash Copper.
Thanks, Rob Spencer |

Zinc chromate primer should do the job over pot metal if your final finish is paint.
Plating pot metal, while interesting to this forum, isn't the way to go if you are finishing with paint. It's the hardest material to plate we know of. It's no short cut over zinc chromate primer. Sand blast the part thoroughly clean, then zinc chromate prime, then finish with a compatible top coat. Ken |
