Newbie in need of advice
I live in the Philippines and am about to acquire a 1950 Packard sedan in need of restoration. It's a large car and has lots of trim and other pieces that are pitted and corroded and in need of rechroming.
The last car I restored had quite a bit of chrome parts as well and rechroming them cost quite a bit. I'm toying with the idea of doing the rechroming myself this time around. I'm a total newbie to metal refinishing so I may be biting off more than I can chew but I love challenges.
I'm thinking of going with the Copy Chrome system. From browsing this site, I'm led to believe that the only kits I'll need to rechrome the pot metal are the Flash Copper & Copy Chrome kits. How big a kit will I need?? It may not be cost-effective to do the bumpers myself but even if I farm the bumpers out and do everything else myself (trim, headlight/taillight bezels, handles, driprails, various interior parts, etc.), I'd still be saving quite a bit.
I don't have a blasting cabinet and don't intend to get one for this project. Can I strip my parts reasonably well using a grinding wheel and chemical strippers?? What do you suggest I use??
And what do you suggest I use to repair damaged pot metal?? Muggyweld or something else??
