For a ground I have grounded my steel airlines to earth stake and use the pipe as good earth ground throughout the shop.

Well guys, I just drove an 8 foot copper ground rod 7 feet down, attached a 16 guage copper wire 12 feet long with an alligator clip attached to it. I don't think you can get any closer to ground than that. The reading was 3 and yet no success on a second coat. Any other suggestions?

I can't offer much more than that.... If I were in that shop, I bet we could figure it out though. Have you tried the "bare hand touching the part" to induce the attraction?

Just on a chance, let's go with this oddball theory I've been working on....

Take a piece of Aluminum Foil and wrap an area of the part you are spraying.... not the whole thing,... say a third or less,.... hang the part by a hook that is ON the aluminum foil, not the rest of the part. Try shooting th foil and see if the charge will "jump" the gap to the part after you get it sticking to the foil.... I did this once on accident using foil as a mask and it made a huge difference.... It may or may not help though. This is just an odd theory.... You can touch the foil with your hand also to help the process if needed, without messing with the rest of the part. The hard part may come when trying to figure out how to shoot the part under the foil though..... just make it where you can rip it loose after getting the powder to stick on the rest of it.

There's likely something really simple happening that's causing the attraction issue. Just not apparent to the rest of us from our homes/computers.

I know we have a layer of top soil here, and I dont know where the original ground rod is so i cant wet the ground where it is. Ill drive a new one in, and try the copper piping as a ground once I get some time off.

Hypersmooth all the way.

Im wondering which to get between those two:

Eastwood pro gun (the green one) 600$
or
Hyper Smooth Coating System (HSCS-02) ~900$

I'd like to know your impression on those two units. The hyper smooth is a hopper which is close to a professional gun. It looks like it does 4 coats without a sweat.

On the other hand, the Eastwood has been receiving good reviews so far, but ive never seen it in action.

Let me know what you think !!

By the way, I can't find the EW Pro gun at all on their site any more. I have one, and love it, but it appears as though they have discontinued it. It's not on Ebay anymore either.

So The real question is, Hypersmooth? or King Coat? or the new EZ50 gun. The latter is available all over the place too. I'm checking it out myself. It seems to work similarly to the EW pro gun.

I think the new EZ50 gun gun did the high cost non user repair EW gun inn. The EZ35 was like the EW pro and could not field repair so that is why it like went away till the China made it field repairable so now we have the 50 and from what I understand all parts can be replace in the field by the consumer and you just hope that the companies that sell it have what is needed in stock so you don't have to wait till the part comes from China and some companies will have all the parts needed in stock I was told.

It just looks like the next "best step" for me, to step up to 50kv, instead of going the 100 kv route.... I can't believe that the kv's cost so much..... from 350 to a grand in 50 little kv's......

alright i have news , good ones too!

I found out my ground in the outlets are good for normal stuff, but they arent good for powdercoating. My house's electrical panel does not have a ground rod.

I hooked my part and my gun's ground cable to the water pipe (have 100% copper pipe all the way to the street).
Remember the candy purple that did not coat thick enough? I shot a solid black over it, perfect coverage. Thats a 3rd coat and it went on fine.

Cant see any purple through the black

keep in mind the finish isnt smooth because first i didnt clean the part, and second, didnt let it cure long enough. I did this to check adhesion and film thickness only.

After this I went and installed a 10 foot grounding rod, cut 1 foot off because I ended up hitting rock bottom. So 9' when 8' is considered enough. Now I need to figure out a way to hook this ground to my part and gun gound in a neat fashion (I dont have a shooting boot)

Step up power supplys are always more costly than step down ones.
