polyesters (tgic) won't hold up to acetone. not sure about urethanes. i *think* they have better chemical resistance, though.

I used one step chrome on the wheels of my 85 Mercedes 300D. They looked great for at least a year. Last week I was in New Jersey and went through a full car wash. Later I noticed the wheels all looked grey! Not shiney anymore. A nice even coat of grey similar to the originals but! What Happened? I figure they were using some high powered solvent to clean the wheels and it took off or dulled the finish. Will a clear coat over the chrome prevent this? Chuck in NH

This is what you should not use. Soap and water is the best and denatured alc is Ok.

Some damage it caused because the customer didn't read the label on what not to use it on.
    1. Brake Cleaner
    2. full Strength Purple Power "Any full strength degreasers".
    3. Concrete cleaner
    4. Aluminum Mag wheel cleaner
    5.Acetone
    6.Carb Cleaner
    7.marine clean
8.polishing compounds ( unless clear coated)
    9.
    10.

I had this started and posted on here but forgot to follow up and update it and now it is closed but did not get to much response on here but did on the other forums so I added to it when some one came up with something new.

I just read what you had coated them with and yep you should have used a clear and even then some stuff can screw with it but at least just maybe you could have polished it back out? I am wondering if the acrylic clear would be better? I have not had any one say they have had any complaints with it? I guess I need to take a panel and just see what happens with diff stuff thrown at it? Its better to always use clears except with some of the solid mirror colors and even then some guys clear them?
