    Default dzolve 917 powder/paint stripper

    Has anyone used this stripper. as I get more work I am losing to much time trying to strip stuff with aircraft stripper that dont work very well. I cant use the b17, its just to dangerous to have where I coat at. I found this dzolve from solvent kleen and it sounds very promising but would like to hear from someone that has used it for an extended time frame before I order a few hundred dollars of stripper. Thanks

    The D-Zolve works pretty well on powders and paints. The drawbacks are,.... Price, Have to strain it often to keep it from working itself to death. The dissolved powder or paint sitting at the bottom, uses up whatever the active ingredient/s are if you let them stay in the container.

    I have a 5 gallon bucket of it un-opened, as I haven't had any jobs that require a stripper of that quality in almost a year. I thought I was gonna use it to death, but most of the stuff I have been doing has been stripped and degreased before I work it. All I do is blast and torch and coat.... I also have a on gallon bucket of it too,... it still works OK, but it's getting weak. I use it to clean my hooks once in a while. I have lots of hooks, so no need to clean them everytime I use one.

    Do you have the 1012 or the 917?

    I have the 1012. I bought the first gallon from EW, and the 5 gallon from the maker.

    i've used 1012 before abandoning it for b17. i don't plan to ever go back. the 1012 (can't speak for the 917) works best when warm (at least 72 degrees), and when aggitated. can't use air to aggitate it (unless it's absolutely dry), bc water in the air breaks the solvent down.

    1012 pros:
    - safe;
    - not smelly;
    - deactivated by water (easy for cleaning/disposal).

    1012 cons:
    - needs to be filtered/strained after each use;
    - likes to be warm;
    - likes to be aggitated;
    - breaks down with water (bad for air aggitation, can't stick wet/freshly-degreased part in it);
    - limited life;
    - cost.

    b-17 pros:
    - nothing faster for stripping paint or powder;
    - water stable;
    - strength doesn't seem to diminish, even when left unfiltered... just add more to tank as level decreases.
    - lower maintenance... just scoop out chips when they get annoying.
    - works great without aggitation;
    - works great at colder shop temperatures without warming;
    - cost.

    b-17 cons:
    - burny;
    - smelly;
    - water stable (more difficult to clean off, seems to reactivate when it gets wet again causing flash corrosion on steel, even after parts are blasted if not properly cleaned off prior to blasting;
    - corrosive (you can watch steel parts rust within 30sec after removal, but they're getting blasted anyway.);
    - disposal cost, should you ever need to dispose of it.

    Another point about b17 but I'm not sure where to classify it (pro/con).

    It strips anodizing and color from aluminum! And it does it in a hurry! I found out by accident when stripping nearly dry activated urethane paint out of an HVLP paint gun. (Don't ask) Just don't believe pot-life specs when it's 100 degrees in the shop.

    I would love to use the b17, but to dangerous for me at this time. I have a sample of the 917 coming from solvent kleen. IT also needs heated to about 130, has to be cleaned out, works best when agitated, but can be diluted up to 25% with water and still work, and more product can be added back in when you get low, and you can strip silocone plugs and it wont hurt rubber. I also have to keep whatever I use in my garage and I've heard with the b17 the fumes alone will rust everything around it. If I ever get a new house with a decent place to put things I will probably get some b17.

    myth. i have it in a steel tank, and though the tank is well-rusted, nothing else around it is (and our tank backs directly up to some nice steel shelving). it's got a heavy vapor that is "self-sealing", as in when the solvent is just sitting there, a little bit evaporates, and sits on top of the liquid preventing any more from evaporating. as long as there's a lid on it (doesn't need to be tight, just enough to prevent air from blowing the vapor barrier around) you won't smell a thing. it stinks to high heaven working over the tank, but we have no fumes in the shop, even when all the bay doors are closed up.

    thanks figurellc, I will keep that in mind. The enviro stuff is really expensive at 24.72 a gallon if I buy at least 20 gallons, plus about $125 shipping. the b17 is only like $12 / gallon shipped if you buy 30 gallons.

    they have a nice large 110 gallon plastic tank that looks like it will fit a motorcycle frame, at Tractor Supply store. That with a lid would be a good stripper tank. Priced at I think, around 60 bucks. Will LDPE plastic be OK with the B17?
